Artist statement
As an artist Aoife has always sought to express a feeling and an energy generated by the abandoned and derelict space and the fragility of memory. Recently her practice has moved away from describing the derelict space and the feelings of the past so literally and instead she has moved towards describing the energy and emotions that evolved out of these explorations. In exploring colour, shape, repetition and a state of order and dis-order her interest and love of abstraction is becoming more and more dominant in her work. Her recent large work has ventured down a path of simplifying chaos, organising clutter and understanding and calming the workings of an anxious mind. Over the past year she has become more conscious and uneasy about the throw away society we live in. The abstract shapes and repeated marks in the work have come to symbolise the enormous amount of waste we create, while also representing a sense of release, a balanced and unbalanced sensation, feelings of chaos and organisation. Through the printing process by layering, repeating, adding and omitting shape, colour and line she creates a landscape of self therapy. Colour is an integral part of her work as is mark making, shape repetition and composition. All of these elements are used to release energy and promote a feeling of calm.
